Research Infrastructure Services (RIS) Compute2 Tutorial Session

Presented by Sizhe Zhang, Operations and System Specialist, WashU CHPC (Center for High Performance Computing)

As announced by the university, Research Infrastructure Services (RIS) will transition from Compute1 to Compute2 soon. This session is designed to help SDS faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers effectively use RIS resources and prepare for this transition.

Topics include:

  • Overview of the Compute2 environment and key differences from Compute1
  • RIS architecture:
    • Distinction between storage nodes and compute nodes
  • Basic usage and job submission workflows
  • Data management:
    • Efficient methods for uploading and downloading data
  • GPU computing:
    • Running PyTorch and deep learning workloads
    • Using GPUs for parallel simulations and general-purpose acceleration

Important preparation (required):
To ensure the session is productive and hands-on, participants must have an active RIS account on Compute2 prior to attending.

A step-by-step guide for applying for an RIS account is available here.

A&S has a short introductory video on using Compute2, which can be found here.

Please submit your application as early as possible to allow sufficient time for account activation.

New RIS account applications will be provisioned on Compute2 by default. If you already have an account on Compute1 and would like to migrate to Compute2, please contact Greg Porter (g.porter@wustl.edu) at A&S IT for guidance.
