Statistics and Data Science Programs – Challenges and Opportunities

Statistics and data science programs have experienced remarkable growth in the big data era. Over the last 20 years in the United States, the number of PhD students in Statistics has doubled, and the number of master's students has nearly quadrupled. Along with this growth comes a range of challenges and responsibilities. Graduate education and faculty research are two highly interwoven pillars within all statistics departments. As a community, we continually seek to position ourselves for the betterment of our discipline.

The one-day workshop will take place on the WashU campus and will feature plenary speakers, breakout discussions, and story-sharing sessions. The workshop is open to chairs and directors of graduate programs of Statistics (and Data Science). Together, we will explore emerging challenges, exchange ideas and best practices, and formulate new action plans to advance our shared vision for the future.

Confirmed speakers at the workshop include Catherine (Kate) Calder (University of Texas at Austin), Galin Jones (University of Minnesota), Xiao-Li Meng (Harvard University), Kimberly Sellers (North Carolina State University), and Abel Rodriguez (University of Washington).

Registration is open until January 31, 2026, and can be accessed here
Information on lodging on or near campus will be shared with you upon your registration.
