The week before Thanksgiving, Academic Coordinator Savannah Boehlein organized a potluck for the department. Many of our faculty and staff were not going to visit family over Thanksgiving break, so it was especially important to take time to be together and fill our stomachs! The spread was impressive, with dishes from all over the world. We also celebrated what we are thankful for or looking forward to by writing messages on leaves, which were later displayed in a department common area. As our department Chair, Xuming wrote so aptly on his leaf, “Warm hearts will win and keep us in great spirit!”

PhD students Alexandra Sabrio and Ayoushman Bhattacharya represented SDS in the Arts and Sciences Gingerbread House Build-Off Contest and won second place for their creation. The judges were particularly impressed with the candy landscaping!

During finals week, Academic Coordinator Savannah Boehlein organized a Cookie Day to help faculty and students to de-stress. There were homemade cookies, a cookie-decorating station, and even homemade red velvet hot chocolate! Besides decorating cookies, the activity for the event was making paper snowflakes. To some, this brought back childhood memories, and to others, this was their first time making a paper snowflake!

The department closed out their Fall semester with a Holiday Party, attended by faculty, staff, students, and their loved ones in the Goldberg Lounge inside the Danforth University Center. The event marked a celebration of all the hard work in the department over the semester and provided an opportunity to learn more about each other. We look forward to all that is to come in the Spring 2025 Semester in SDS!
