Xuming He receives the 2025 Noether Distinguished Scholar Award

Xuming He, the Kotzubei-Beckmann Distinguished Professor of Statistics and Data Science, has been named the recipient of the 2025 Gottfried E. Noether Distinguished Scholar Award of the American Statistical Association (ASA).

The Noether awards were established in 1999 as a tribute to Gottfried Emanuel Noether, a leading scholar in nonparametric statistics with interests in research and teaching. Noether’s family presented the American Statistical Association with an endowment fund to recognize distinguished researchers and educators and to support research in the broad field of nonparametric statistics.

The Noether Award Committee selects the Noether Distinguished Scholar based on "outstanding contributions to the theory, methodology, and/or novel applications to nonparametric statistics—interpreted broadly—that have had substantial, sustained impact on the subject, its practical applications, and its pedagogy." This year, the committee selected Professor He for his influential contributions to the development of quantile regression, semiparametric inference, and robust statistics. The same committee also selects two junior scholars for this year’s Noether Early-Career Scholar Award.

Professor He received the award at the ASA Awards Ceremony on August 5th at the Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM 2025) in Nashville, Tennessee, and delivered his Noether presentation at a special session on August 6 at the same event. Congratulations!
