Hangcen Zou introduces Grad Student Seminar Series

Graduate Student Seminars

During the Spring 2025 semester, PhD Students Shourjo Chakraborty and Hangcen Zou organized four presentations for the department from SDS PhD student speakers Ayoushman Bhattacharya, Tianwei Zhou, Zhichen Xu, and Alex Sabrio. The seminars were attended by graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, and postdocs. Each event included Domino's pizza, and students presented topics covering a range of statistical topics- from neuroscience to artificial intelligence.

Our graduate students also hosted guest speaker Dr. Shinjini Kundu (MD, PhD) from the Department of Radiology at WashU. Dr. Kundu presented her talk, "Re-imagining precision medicine: beyond what the eye can see", where she demonstrated how TBM identifies changes in the brain associated with aerobic fitness in sedentary older adults.

Statistics & Data Science Seminar Series

Among many others throughout the Spring semester, the department hosted seminar speaker Yong Chen.

Yong Chen (PhD, John Hopkins University) is a Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. Chen is also the Founding Director of the Center for Health AI and Synthesis of Evidence (CHASE) at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests include data integration, novel methods, and translational research. After Chen's talk, "PDA: Privacy-preserving Distributed Algorithms for Clinical Evidence Generation using Networked Data", SDS hosted a reception. The reception was attended by faculty, PhD students, postdocs, as well as several visitors to the department, including Dr. Chen.

Graduation Open House

On May 12, the Department of Statistics & Data Science hosted a post-graduation open house for our graduates and their families. This was a time for students to connect with SDS faculty, introduce their families, and recognize their academic accomplishments. There were refreshments, decorations, and celebrations all around! Congratulations to our 2025 graduates!

Other Events

Additionally in Spring 2025, SDS co-hosted a Biodiversity Presentation from Missouri Botanical Garden, along with the Living Earth Collective. The department also hosted our first Undergraduate Awards Ceremony and released our inaugural bi-annual newsletter
